What, How and Why - Outdoor Learning Resources
Outdoor Learning Resources
This is the second piece in a three-part series of blogs from our wonderful administration assistant, Melanie Bassett. Mel shares some tried and tested ideas for outdoor learning resources with your little ones. Let us know in the comments below if you tried any and how you got on! It continues in the same format explained in Mel’s first blog titled, ‘What, How and Why - English Activities For Children’.
The Great Outdoors
With so much beauty around us, it’s wonderful to get out exploring, whether that’s at home in the garden or further afield. Being outside is proven to reduce stress and stimulate the mind. “I want to look for fairies Mummy.” An ‘aha’ moment from me...rushes upstairs and grabs a fairy figurine of my daughters, throw some coats on and off we went for a woodland walk. We walked for hours whilst my husband and I hid said fairy for her to find. It was simply magical. Here’s a few more ideas for outside fun...
Bug Hotel
What – Build a bug hotel
How – check out this link for a wonderful bug hotel. It offers a guide for children to make a bug hotel with items laying about at home.
Why –Promotes curiosity of the outside world and small creatures around them.
Bird Feeder
What – Bird feeders
How – This link will show you the bird feeders we have been creating at home
Why – Studying birds can be tricky as they are so quick; we have found encouraging them in with these bird feeders has been a fantastic way of keeping them in our eyesight long enough for us to look at. You could try keeping a log with your little one to see which birds like which feeders!
Plant ID
What – Plant vs food
How – Challenge your child to a game of plant identification. Using the internet or printed pictures can they tell you what food is grown from the plant in the picture? Bonus points if they can suggest a meal they may eat which contains the item!
Why – It’s so important that children understand about where food has come from and what they eat. This will also encourage them to make positive and healthy food choices in the future.
We would love to hear about your outdoor adventures with your little ones during lockdown. Tell us all about them in the comments section below!
